Thanks - that makes particular sense in our case, as the boiler has been installed with no pump overrun, so with a highish jacket temperature, the boiler does indeed overheat, cutting out at about 88C due to the overheat stat. If that was ever to fail then I guess it would start producing steam whic...
You are describing the expansion vessel. There should be a blow off vent/pipe leading to the outside, from a PRV, normally with a red knob on it.
Thanks for the replies. No expansion vessel - it is not a sealed system (ie there is a header/expansion tank). Bu...

Is an air release valve a pressure release valve?

Had a (wood chip) boiler installed at our local school, and the manufacturers instructions state that a safety valve should be fitted to the boiler. But the device at the specified position appears to me to be an air release valve (a small brass cylinder with a bike tyre type valve on top, with the ...

I used Western Red Cedar which is a very resinous soft wood and therefore quite weather resistant. The bench itself is a very simple elegant design the slats being strung together with bead spacers.

Condensation within secondary glazing

Have just fitted some fixed (Easyfix superglaze) secondary glazing units to a wooden casement window which suffered badly from condensation. The window itself had been painted shut, and I notice popular opinion is that the secondary glazing should be draft proofed whilst the external window should n...

Subsidence or not?

Here's a question, perhaps a difficult one: When we bought our house some 6 years ago there were a couple of cracks due to movement - nothing major, really just hairline through bricks and mortar up to 1st floor level. Our survey and further expert investigation concluded that the movement was due t...

DIY secondary glazing solution

Are there any products out there to enable me to fit my own affordable secondary glazing? All I want is to fix some non opening secondary glazing units to some windows that suffer from condensation. I do not need to open those windows (even in a fire), so a unit that simply screws in place would be ...

How best to paint a sooty surface

I need to paint what used to be a (wood?) boiler room which over the years has accumulated a thin layer of black on the brick walls and rendered ceiling. I have cleaned as best I can - no loose stuff, but still pretty black. How best to tackle this? Should I seal/stabilise first with PVA or some oth...

Fluctuating oil pressure on Rayburn burner

When I attach a pressure guage to a Rayburn 480K (a Nu-way burner) the needle vibrates so rapidly that I can't even take a reading (the guage is working fine on other burners). What is the likely cause - I assume the oil pump, or is it possible to just replace the pressure regulator part of the pump...

Ceiling lights causing loft condensation

I've recently noticed condensation in the loft space. I have improved things by increasing the loft ventilation, but I suspect that the main cause is the abundance of ceiling lights in our upstairs rooms (the spot type that sit in a round hole in the ceiling). Is there any solution to prevent warm m...

Don't think it cross threaded - it screwed in very (too) easily. The valve itself is very good quality and looks to be accurately machined. I suspect the thread in the radiator is at fault. But it must be possible to resolve rather than going down the route of using the warranty?

Leaking valve tail on towel rail

Recently installed a towel rail, and had a lot of problems getting a seal on the valve tail where it screws into the rail. Initially I was using normal PTFE tape which failed even with 20 turns of it. Then tried gas tape which also weeped. Thought I had fixed the problem using LSX on its own, but af...

Thanks - the manufacturer sent me a diagram which should have been included with the valve. I tried 20 turns of PTFE and then 2 turns of gas tape - both leaked. In the end I used LSX on its own which did the trick. Those little problems can be very frustrating!
