Re: Old chimney render repair

Thanks - yes, I think that's good advice - he says it's guaranteed so that's an added appeal (though what exactly is guaranteed we are yet to ask!).

Re: Waterproofing crack in concrete

Thanks S

I think you're right - especially as there's more than one crack and there's one that's getting on for a cm across. But as the surface is walked on by the public is a membrane realistic? If I did that and put a thin layer of cement over it might that do the job - what do you think?

Waterproofing crack in concrete

Hi, My storeroom is underneath a pavement. Before it becomes the pavement proper there are cracks in the concrete and the water goes through the cracks into the storeroom. The only solution I can think of is to fill in the cracks with a waterproof repair concrete, but don't know for certain that tha...

Re: Socket Burn't and Cracked but Fuse Didn't Trip?

Hi, About to change socket but confused (1) can't find socket like the old one - socket +light switch - only ones for cookers (maybe that's what I need?) (2) Is there some way I can use a simple double socket - put a plug on for the light? (3) If (2) what should I be looking for in a double socket? ...

Re: Socket Burn't and Cracked but Fuse Didn't Trip?

Sorry for delay in replying. Many thanks for swift advice. I will change the socket and also the plug - although when I plugged the washing machine into extension cable (thinking the problem was simply with the socket) it worked all right - I guess though that I should still change plug - better saf...

Socket Burn't and Cracked but Fuse Didn't Trip?

SOCKETS.JPG Hi, Attached is pic of double socket in my washing machine shed. The socket no longer works and I don't know why what made it so cracked and burnt - also a bit confused as to why the fuse didn't trip. I suppose it could have been moisture getting in, but would that have resulted in such...

Both the taps move around when the water's turned on. I tried to undo the lower not on the cold tap to change t...

How Reliable is Checkatrade for Finding a Plumber?

Hi,
Looking for a plumber to replace some taps - the house is old and the under sink pipe work is very complex so probably too risky for me - and I'm going to look up one on checkatrade. Any views on how reliable they are?
thanks

ceiling Light Fitting and What are all These Wires and Where do They go?

Hi, I'm fitting a two wire ceiling light. When I take the old rose off there's black, red, brown and blue (which lead to the light). The light operates from a simple on/off switch. I need to take the existing base plate off to attach the new base plate, but have to idea what to do with the black and...

Advice Needed on Making a 5m Wide Driveway Double Gate

Hi, My old driveway gate has rotted away and I have two strong posts remaining . The gap to be gated (between these posts) is 5m. I can in no way afford to get the gates made professionally so have to have a go myself. It's going to be heavy because (a) each gate will be 2 1/2 m long and approx 1 1/...
