Re: New extension GRP flat roof - Cold or Warm construction?

For me, I would go with the warm roof. it has no thermal bridging. It's breathable so there is no moisture build up which could lead to mould. They are simply insulated more efficiently than cold roofs because of the way they are formed. they are also cheaper to install.

Re: Roof insulation absorbing condensation

Yes, your issue is the bathroom fans dispensing into the attic. You need to install a Flexi pipe onto the fan and then connect the other end to a vent tile or a wall vent. If you keep ventilating the bathroom into your attic, this will keep getting worse no matter what you do. This high humid air ne...

Re: Condensation in attic bedroom after replacing roof

Yes, no need to have the dehumidifier on when the window is open. What would be better is a fan with the window slightly open. I would then close the window at night and turn on the dehumidifier. Maybe have it on a timer save you doing it manually day and every night. It also sounds like there is ve...

Re: Insulating under caravan - is membrane needed?

If you want to use a wool type insulation, then use Rockwool. Its waterproof and insects hate it. Using a netting is a good idea to stop the insulation from falling, but mice etc. might like that so might be a good idea to use some timber laths also just in case. Rockwool RWA45 will do the trick for...

Re: Guidance on insulating cellar ceiling

Yes, I would install insulation between the joists, but then I would also put back up the superquilt before you board over. No need then for vapour plasterboard. Make sure you tape the joints of the superqiuilt this time. Also, airflow is essential so might be a good idea to have two air vents 1 in ...

Re: Bad condensation on inside of double glazed windows

Hi, This is a ventilation issue. I would suggest installing wall vents or some sort of Heat Recovery Ventilation Unit (HRV). There are many on the market, with Brink being a good starting point. Install this, and you will never look back. If that is not an issue, you will need to install cross-venti...

Re: Extension not retaining heat

It's most likely your Velux windows that are the issue. Heat rises so it then hits the glass in the roof and gets cold. Maybe look at replacing the Velux glass with a higher performance glass. I would think that would solve a big part of your problem. Then, of course, you need to check what insulati...

Re: Insulation problem and small air gap - please help

Hi, In real terms no this is not ok. There is a requirement to have a 50mm gap between your insulation and your roof covering. This is regulation. However, how much of a difference it really makes between 50mm and 25mm is debatable. Ultimately the main reason behind the 50mm airflow is to ensure the...

Re: Automating water tank with an immersion heater switching

Hi, have you looked into maybe Google Nest devices. They work well with a heating system and water heating systems. This should allow you to connect to both elements for heating your water and control both with timers so they don't come on at the same time. You would also be able to set times for wh...

Re: Dry hip and ridge poor installation

That is definitely and issue for sure. Water can easily get in under that ridge cap and if there is any break in the felt underneath you will get water ingress. you also run the risk of water pooling in low spots on the felt if there are any.

It's good that you can see the DPM as that means your floor is watertight and that the DPM is under the floor. You should use a proper DPC membrane for anything that touches the concrete or block. Although the 1000g DPM is similar, DPC is better. If you need something to cover the floor then use DPM...

Re: Help with damp and best course of action with wall

If there is damp you should remove all of it and let the wall dry out over a number of days. Then when the wall is completely dry you can go about finishing it with whatever finish you wish. Also, make sure the seal is replaced and working correctly before you try to finish the wall.

Re: Weatherproofing existing garden shed

If you can you should do 3 things. 1. Use a breather membrane in behind the cladding. 2. Install some rigid board insulation throughout the building to prevent condensation. 3. Install at least 1 air vent to allow airflow from 1 side of the building to the other. If you only put in 1 vent try to ins...
