Re: Removal of Render to Inject Damp Proof Course?

You do need to remove the internal plaster to a height at least 300mm above the damp. It can contain salts leftover from the water that will continue to leech out and discolour your interior wall. In addition, the damp has probably damaged the plaster making it likely to flake and to last as long as...

Re: Preparing Surface Around Bath for Retiling

Yes, you can tile directly onto plaster but you need to make sure your tiles are not too heavy. Gypsum plaster has a maximum weight tolerance of 20kg/m2. Before you tile remove any damages or flaky plaster and fill. You should also apply a tile primer to the plaster first.

Re: Damp Internal Upstairs Bedroom Wall That Faces the bad Weather Elements

That sounds like damp with slat and black mould. When a wall gets damp the salt crystals in the building material and water rise to the surface and form white marks which you can wipe off. Damp walls get black mould so it sounds like you have this too. You should get some specialist black mould trea...

Re: Unhappy with Tiling Job, What to do Next?

You can regrout. It's amazing what a transformation it makes. It is a perfectly simple DIY job but it is time-consuming. You can fill in holes along the skirting or add a layer of beading to make it a bit neater. You can't fix the fact the tiles are not level though. If they are really bad you reall...

Yes it probably is. However, you can remedy this with good interior lighting and you might also be able to introduce bigger windows.

Re: Rear Garden Design Requires Input

That looks like a perfectly sensible design to me. It makes good use of the space, is low maintenance and modern. If you are concerned about drainage you can simply dig a trench along boundaries to a drain - line it with weed retardant sheets and fill it with coarse gravel. Cover with more sheeting ...

Re: Falling Damp in Living Room Chimney Breast

That does look really bad. Does the damp get darker or bigger when there is bad weather? If not then it could be an interior water pipe leaking. Water can run along floors and cables so it doesn't have to eminate from directly over the fireplace. Are you able to access the water pipes to and from yo...

Re: Advice Rising Damp in one-Bedroom Basement Flat

Sorry, we can't - it depends on how much airing you can do, how much sun the flat gets and whether you use a dehumidifier and if so how much. By the sounds of it, the damp is very bad so I would think a month or two. It's worth a chat with the insurers to see if they can provide a commercial dehumid...

Sorry, I posted a link with an explanation but it has been removed. Just do a google search for rising damp and bridging.

Re: External Damproof for House Wall Below Ground Level

No you can not! If you connect your house to anything that is below ground level without proper damp proofing you asking for a big problem. Water will travel up via capillary action from the ground into your wall and into your home. If you want to understand more this is a basic explanation - find t...

Re: salt stains

Yes I would agree - of the stain is changing then it would indicate damp - through the floor or maybe a window frame. First, you need to stop the damp then you need to remove this damaged plater and replace it. Have you had a dmap specialist come out to assess the stains?

Your picture is too small. It needs to be much larger and we need to be able to see inside the tube. Is it coming out of an old electrical socket?

Re: Damp Blocked off Chimney Breast Issues Including When Using the Bath or Shower

That looks quite bad. If it gets worse when you use water then there must be a leak somewhere. The roof may also be leaking where the chimney was blocked off. Can you access the space from above to look to see if there are water pipes anywhere or any puddles of water forming?
