Loudspeaker stands - joining ply to steel pipe

I plan on making loudspeaker stands using 4"/100mm steel pipe and 20mm ply wood. The speakers themselves are heavy at approx. 15Kg each hence the use of steel pipe. They will look fairly basic with square ply panels fixed to each end of the pipe. The problem is how to fix the pipe to wood so no...

Removing Wall Under Stairs to fit Desk

I would like advice on removing a wall under the stairs. This forms a small storage area but I want to open it up so as to have a desk in there. How do I establish whether it is safe to do and will the stairs be OK without the wall? I've not been under the floor to see if there is a corresponding wa...

Need Help Choosing a Petrol Strimmer for Allotments

At my allotments are several areas where weeds proliferate. Among these are grasses, nettles, dock and scores of other weeds. I'm looking to buy a strimmer or brush cutter as they are sometimes referred to. I think around £100 will cover it as usage will only be occasional. I'd be obliged if someone...

How to Estimate and Fit Easy Verge (U) System to Replace old Verge

My garage roof verge is in a sorry state with mortar having fallen out and wood rotted. Have decided to install Easy Verge (U) but need to know how to estimate the quantities needed and also how it is fitted as the run is continuous with no apex, just a plain end against a wall. I assume I will have...

Need Plastic Floor Runner for Unwell Cat

Hi, My cat has become ill and is not very mobile. She has been weeing on the wool runner in the hall which is no real problem as it came with the house when I bought it and it's not her fault. I put trays there for her to use but can't control the situation when I'm not around. I've been searching c...

Making old Fireplace Look Good - Seal up or Turn into Alcove?

In several programmes such as Escape to the Country, Location Location I have seen fireplaces which have been made into an alcove. I presume that the chimney immediately above the fire place opening has therefore been sealed. How does this affect ventilation? Also, some fireplaces I've seen locally ...

Stepped on Tape Measure, Tape Broken in Two - How can I Repair?

I stepped on my tape measure (Stanley 3m/10ft) today and broke the tape in two.
Any suggestions how to repair this? Maybe with an extra strong adhesive tape?
I might just try some epoxy resin when I get the time and hope it does the trick.

Re: How to Kill a Tree Next to Party Fence and Near House Wall?

I'm not advocating you trespass onto your neighbours property or destroy his property, which the tree is. The product you need to invest in should be a glyphosate based weed killer although glyphos is available in a concentrated crystalline form which is the best. It is also available commercially a...

Need Spool for Gardentec Strimmer - What Spool to Use?

Several years ago I bought a 3-in-1 cordless garden tool set comprising strimmer, hedge trimmer and grass cutter. The model number may be BJ 2006 which is stamped on all 3 items but I’m not certain as the manual has no details of model number. The spool holding the cutting line on the strimmer broke...

Water not very hot in electric shower

I have a Triton T80 (8.4KW) electric shower which just isn't giving water as hot as it did at high temperature, certainly not as hot as during the summer anyway. The shower has four settings for power, off - cold - warm - hot and there is also the rotary temperature control. With the power on hot an...

Gas cooker low oven

I have a Valor Vienna gas cooker (c. 1990?) which does not give high heat in the oven. The burner ignites as is expected although when the oven control is set to any high gas mark the burner does not fire up to give any significant heat output. As it is I cannot use the over although in recent month...

Gas fire not giving sufficient heat

I had a Valor Black Beauty (Model 349) installed last winter. I noticed then that the heat output wasn’t all that great but left things as they were. This year I notice the room temperature barely exceeds 19°C and am concerned that something has not been done according to the installation manual. Th...

Securing a gate so it does not open

Hi, I manage an allotment site where one member (getting on a bit in years) insists on driving on another persons plot with his car. What I urgently need to do somehow stop one of the two gates to the site from opening. The gate has a riser bar on one side which goes into the ground holding the gate...

Which pull saw to buy?

I have trees at an allotment site which need cutting down. The trees are trimmed annually to about 2m but cannot be completely removed as other hedging is present which must not be damaged. I have been told that a Japanese pull saw is what I need so the question is which to buy and does it have to b...
