Re: Repairing/Replacing my Pitched Ceiling

Hi diy_luke, Because of the location of the damp area it is more likely to be condensation, especially if it’s a north facing roof. If you are going to replace the ceiling check that the roof is ventilated - if not install some. Fit PIR insulation between the rafters leaving a ventilation gap above ...

Hi tonyb13,
Suggest you use expanding foam, once it’s set trim it back and plaster over it.

Re: Can you concrete over a hardcore and screed base?

Hi lgc369,
You’ll be fine provided the thickness is 75mm or more. 50mm is too thin for “poured” concrete.

Re: Using a long SDS Plus chisel

Hi letzdiy,
You should be fine with the long chisel but depending on the thickness of the concrete breaking it up may be painfully slow. You may do better with a sledge hammer.

Re: Parent's chalet bungalow - insulation plan.

Hi theteaboy, To increase the depth of the existing joists you could fit bits of 125x50 on top of them or you could use a number of short pieces (packers), the advantage of the short pieces is that you can work round existing services on top of the joists. Even if you could remove the glass fibre in...

Re: Parent's chalet bungalow - insulation plan.

Hi theteaboy, As you are finding it is difficult to upgrade the insulation in a chalet bungalow without a complete roof strip and upgrade. Point 1 It looks like you have 150/175 deep joists in the purple crawl areas, lift the boarding you already have in place, add 100/125 packers, fill the gaps bet...

Re: Parent's chalet bungalow - insulation plan.

Hi theteaboy, Thank you for such a detailed post. The easiest and most effective solution would be: 1. Increase the depth of the insulation in the purple crawl areas to the recommended 270mm if you wish to retain these areas for storage you may have to use 100mm PIR insulation and overboard this. 2....

Hi stansfanclub,
What you describe would appear to be inadequate support for 6 ft panels, suggest you fit concrete spurs next to the wood ones.

Re: Erecting a clothes line post into existing concrete

Hi danz01,
Given what you are trying to achieve you may be best hiring a diamond core bit and drill so you can set a sleeve in the concrete of a suitable size for your pole. Rotary airers usually come with a suitable sleeve.

Re: Loft Conversion-Brick on Wall Plate

Hi granto1986,
It’s difficult to imagine that the bricks are anything more than you suggest - a means of isolating the loft space from the facia area, Suggest you knock a couple off and see if there is anything structural involved.

Re: Repairing cast iron guttering parts

Hi nubidiyer,
You have cast iron hoppers feeding into plastic downpipe. Scrape the loose paint off the hoppers, wire brush them then apply a couple of coats of Hammerite. Alternatively replace the hoppers with plastic ones - especially the one with three waste pipes feeding into it.

Re: Worcester heatslave 18/25 combi boiler too hot

Hi dandies,
Failure of the thermostat is the most likely problem. If you didn’t last time can only suggest that you use an approved Worcester Bosch engineer to identify the problem and fix it this time round.

Re: AIR IN RADIATORS

Hi epax,
I suspect he is proposing extending the vent pipe into the water level - yes this may create further problems with the system continuously pumping hot water through the cold feed tank. You could try his proposal but check the tank regularly - they are not designed for hot water.

Re: How to Fix Plastic Track to Brick Wall for Heavy Curtains

Hi autistic trying, Yes you will need wall plugs and a masonry drill probably both 6mm. Drill into the wall, the first bit will be easy so this will be the depth of the plaster, you will then need to drill a further 25-30mm into the bricks. When you remove the drill you will then be able to size the...

Hi apprentice, If the manufacturer of the washer/dryer states it is suitable for installation in a bathroom and once fitted it will be beyond zone 2 ie more than 600mm away from a shower, bath or basin you should be ok. If there is no manufacturers bathroom ok the machine will then have to be more t...
