Re: Concrete tiled floor damp

just be aware that if the concrete floor has failed due to sulphate attack, then so may your concrete strip foundations. if you have more concrete poured make sure it has a high cement content. gen 3 is not good enough needs to be something like grade C35/40 - cant remember exactly

Re: Drilling into wall

just a guess, but if you are drilling over the windows to fix curtain rails, you may be drilling into a concrete lintel, in which case you wont be able to drill them without an sds drill.

Re: Are my joists strong enough?

look at the superceeded building regs part A from 1992 i think on the planning portal website. span tables in the back. but i would say the timber are too small for any large loads.
from memory, the applied loads in in kilonewtons.
1kg/m2 = 9.8N/m2
1000kg/m2 = 9.8kN/m2

Re: Worn and uneven oil stone ?

i have teh same problem,so i assumed it was poor technique if you have two stones of a similar size, rub them together and they will become flat, boring and time consuming. have two stones, one for large blades which will remain flatish and one for smaller blades, therefore does not matter if it hol...

Re: Correct door & frame sizes?

while your waiting for a builder to reply, pop down to b&q or somewhere, have a look at the door linings (or wahtever they're called) available to get an idea of of teh thickness of teh jamb etc, then have a look at what doors are avaiable, then you can see if a joiner is required.

Re: Retaining all

this could be built from RC concrete, mass concrete, masonry, timber, or stone filled gabions. It may need to be designed by an engineer, its only little so hopefully not. you mentioned a railyway line, depending on its position in relation to the wall you may need to do this properly and network ra...

Re: Conservatory or Orangery - which is greener?

A conservatory should not be used all year round as they are too hot in the summer and too cold in winter. heating them is effectivly the same as a garden heater, very wastfull Also an external grade door must be fitted between the conservatory and the house. This is not a requirement for an oranger...

you proposing to reduce the depth of the joist from 8" to 3". The shear is greatest at then ends and should be checked to ensure the timber does not fail. The structural engineer you are using to provided the required calcs to building control can check this out for you. I would use JJIs o...
